Illustrating for Fantasy

This self-initiated project is meant to emphasise illustration and book cover design’s role in bringing literary fantasy worlds to life. It will be a handmade hardcover rebind of “A Court of Thorns and Roses” by Sarah J. Maas, with illustrations of impacting scenes of the book included to it.

My intention was to bring the book’s fantasy, whimsical storybook atmosphere to its cover, as well through illustrations within the text block, by making my own deluxe-looking rebind that draws inspiration from Illustration’s Golden Age.

My main inspiration for the creative style of my visuals were the illustrations for fairytales from the Golden Age, when the developing technologies allowed for books to have illustrations more easily. I was interested in particular by their use of framing, which gave the work a level of epicness. I made the cover with this in mind, and went through different combinations of the gold and black.
